But a thousand kisses can last a
lifetime.

When seventeen-year-old Rune
Kristiansen returns from his native Norway to the sleepy town of Blossom Grove,
Georgia, where he befriended Poppy Litchfield as a child, he has just one thing
on his mind. Why did the girl who was one half of his soul, who promised to
wait faithfully for his return, cut him off without a word of explanation?

My review:
The right words still haven’t come to me about how I feel about this book or how I processed what the hell happened.
Firstly, don’t disregard the warning that comes at the end of synopsis. Just one word. “Tearjerker.”
Going in blind to this book was the best and worst thing simultaneously that could have happened to me. My emotions were purely driven from the words on the page not a preconceived notion that I will cry at the story.
Rune and Poppy shared a love any adult can only dream about. And they got this as CHILDREN! Through separation, cultural differences and doing what they thought was best for one another, nothing could stop such love. Nothing. Not Rune and his bad boy attitude nor Poppy and her brightness.
There are so many visual “aids” throughout this book that will forever bind me to this story. Pink cherry blossoms, a rainbow after a storm, Chinese lanterns, footprints in the sand, a vintage camera, a mason jar (just waiting for some paper hearts)
Tillie has written nothing short of genius. I have followed her literary journey over the last two years and fallen deeply in love many a time with the characters she writes. I never knew writing could be quite this powerful. I never knew I had it in me to cry so hard that I couldn’t breath. To cry so much that I had to stop reading and calm myself down.
Few stories stay with me. And I mean stay with me, I carry certain epic tales around with me in my heart, this joins them. Thank you, Tillie.
