From
New York Times & USA Today bestselling author, Kendall Ryan, comes the third
book in the Filthy Beautiful Lies series.
Pace Drake loves sex. He knows where get it, what to say, what to do, and he makes
no apologies for satisfying his needs. But when he meets single mom, Kylie
Sloan, he’s enthralled by her, and begins to question his standard operating
procedure. After all, there’s no chase, no mystery when banging a woman in a
nightclub bathroom. Kylie’s depth and determination make the sloppy, drunken
hookups that fill his weekends seem empty and shallow. She’s the opposite of the
desperate, clingy women he’s used to. She doesn’t want or need anyone to take
care of her and that only makes him want to care for her more.
Kylie’s trust in men has vanished. The last guy she was with played ding-dong-ditch-it
with her uterus and left her with a baby to raise. Now her infant son is the
only man she has time for, even if she misses sex and intimacy more than she’d
ever admit. Opening her heart up to a younger man who’s best known for
no-strings-attached sex and his casual lifestyle is probably the worst idea
she’s ever had. But Pace wants to prove to her there are still a few good guys
left, and watching the sweet way he interacts with her baby makes her want to
try…but she can really trust that his days of hitting it and quitting it are in
his past?
Filthy Beautiful Lust is the third book in the Filthy Beautiful Lies series, however it can be read as a standalone novel (no cliffhanger). To understand the full growth and development of the characters, it is recommended that you begin with book 1, Filthy Beautiful Lies.
I take a sip of the liquor
and immediately decide drinking is a bad idea. I’m already on edge and
frustrated. The alcohol will only make me obsess more. Abandoning the glass, I
sit down in a leather chair across from Colton and let out a heavy sigh.
“Tell me about Kylie.”
His gaze narrows. “Fuck
no. You and Kylie?” He shakes his head, rising to his feet. “No.
Abso-fucking-lutely not. If this is what you came here to talk about, you can
leave now.” He points to the door, his expression unwavering.
Goddamn. “You’re no
fun.” Changing my mind, I stride over to the cabinet, pluck up the glass
and down the rest of the drink. It burns like a mother fucker on the way down,
but it’ll do the trick, numbing whatever this weird sensation is inside my
chest.
“I’m serious, Pace.
She’s a good girl. She doesn’t need to get tangled up in your…ways…”
“My ways?” Now I’m
getting pissed. He’s saying I’m not good enough for her.
“Hit it and quit it.
Pump and dump. Whatever you want to call it, it’s not happening. Not with
Kylie.”
“I know that, asshole.
I wanted to take her out – like legitimately take her out to dinner. Enjoy her
company.”
He frowns at me again, that
crease in his forehead deepening. “You’re telling me you don’t want to fuck
her?”
“Don’t be a dumbfuck.
Of course I want to. But I’m just saying that I wouldn’t hit it once and never
call her again.”
“What would you do,
then? Move in? Marry her? Raise her son?” he challenges.
“I haven’t thought that
fucking far ahead. Christ.” Now I’m suddenly pacing the floor of his
office and I have no idea why. This entire exchange is stressing me out. I came
here hoping to get her number, and instead I’m getting grilled like a steak.
He’s pulling the older brother card on me like he does so often. The dick.
“And that’s exactly why
I don’t want you messing around with her. You don’t have a plan. Kylie needs a man with a plan. Not one with an agenda that only includes getting his crank yanked.”
I sink down into the chair,
hating this concerned older brother act.

Title: After (After #1)
Author: Anna Todd
Release date: 21 October
Synopsis:
Now newly revised and expanded, Anna Todd’s After fanfiction racked up 1 billion reads online and captivated readers across the globe. Experience the Internet’s most talked-about book for yourself!
There was the time before Tessa met Hardin, and then there’s everything AFTER… Life will never be the same. #Hessa
Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She’s got direction, ambition, and a mother who’s intent on keeping her that way.
But she’s barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, tattoos, and lip ring, Hardin is cute and different from what she’s used to.
But he’s also rude – to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin.nd she does—until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss it ignites within her a passion she’s never known before.
He’ll call her beautiful, then insist he isn’t the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her in deeper.
Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin’s prejudice about nice girls like her?
My review:
If I hadn’t have been told this book was fan fiction based on One Direction it wouldn’t have made a difference to the enjoyment levels of the book. Being a non-fan (*ducks and hides*) of 1D the only connection, to me, that was glaringly obvious was Hardin Scott’s name being the same initials and syllables as a member of the band.
Hardin is our male lead. He is rough around the edges and seems to be in a perpetual foul mood. His attitude towards our leading lady, Tessa Young no different to what you’d expect the bad British boy to have.
Tessa is growing up fast since moving away to college. Away from her controlling mother and perfect, Gap cardigan wearing boyfriend. Into the world of study, parties and boys.
Hardin fights the foreign feelings he has for Tessa, acting out hurtfully and spitefully towards her and making her upset, angry and tearful a lot of the time. But she keeps going back for more; feeling a connection to him that she’s never felt towards another person.
You see their dynamic change and grow through the book and even though there are times when they go around and around the same circle – leaving you feeling frustrated and wondering if the whole 582 pages are just the same thing over in a loop – the story does continue. And that ending. Oh my. It may be my ignorance or naivety but I did not see that ending coming. You know something was up and I didn’t have any theories as to what it was but others may have done and they may have been the correct guess to the ending of this first part of Hardin and Tessa’s story together.
The chapters aren’t too long and for me this meant it was even harder to put the book down as I knew that something must be happening soon and if it was in the next chapter it wouldn’t be much longer for me to wait to find out.
Well done to Anna for the way she ended that first book. I am in awe of her writing and can see why she got so many hits on Wattpad. It has left me with tears in my eyes for Tess and a crack in my heart for Hardin. I want to be angry at her for not seeing it sooner (it being the ending – no spoilers here!) and I want to hate Hardin for his actions but I just can’t find it in me.
I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to read this as it would have been something I would have simply overlooked in favour of the many other books in my TBR list. And I am grateful that the wait between books isn’t too long! All four parts to their story will be out by the end of February 2015! Bring it on I say. Make me fall in and out of love with these characters some more!

As I lay there, trying to swallow a loud, obnoxious yawn, I remembered something he’d said when we first met, about life being too short. I imagined he had firsthand experience with shortened lives while he was serving. That mentality came from experience. I got that now. Could even understand it, but there was something I didn’t understand.
“Why?” I asked.
There was a beat. “Why what?”
Jax sounded tired, and I should shut up or point out that I was now tired and could sleep, so he could leave. But I didn’t. “Why are you here? You don’t know me and . . .” I trailed off, because there really wasn’t anything left to say.
A minute went by, and he hadn’t answered my question, and then I think another minute ticked on, and I was okay with him not answering because maybe he didn’t even know. Or maybe he was just bored and that was why he was here.
But then he moved.
Jax pressed against my back, and the next breath I took got stuck in my throat. My eyes shot open. The sheet and blanket were between us, but they felt like nothing.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Getting comfortable.” He dropped an arm over my waist, and my entire body jerked against his. “It’s time to sleep I think.”
“But—”
“You can’t sleep when you talk,” he remarked.
“You don’t need to be all up on me,” I pointed out.
His answering chuckle stirred the hair along the back of my neck. “Honey, I’m not all up on you.”
I freaking begged to differ on that point. I started to wiggle away, but the arm around my waist tightened, holding me in place.
“You’re not going anywhere,” he announced casually, as if he wasn’t holding me prisoner in the bed.
Okay. The whole prisoner thing might be melodramatic, but he wasn’t letting me up. Not when he was getting all kinds of comfy behind me.
Oh my God, this was spooning. Total spooning. I was spooning with an honorary member of the Hot Guy Brigade. Did I wake up in a parallel universe?
“Sleep,” he demanded, as if the one word carried that much power. “Go to sleep, Calla.” This time his voice was softer, quieter.
“Yeah, it doesn’t work that way, Jax. You have a nice voice, but it doesn’t hold the power to make me sleep on your command.”
He chuckled.
I rolled my eyes, but the most ridiculous thing ever was the fact that after a couple of minutes, my eyes stayed shut. I . . . I actually settled in against him. With his front pressed to my back, his long legs cradling mine, and his arm snug around my waist, I actually did feel safe. More than that, I felt something else—something I hadn’t felt in years.
I felt cared for . . . cherished.
Which was the epitome of dumb, because I barely knew him, but feeling that, recognizing what the warm, buzzing feeling was, I fell right asleep.
